Skye’s Rest Inn · Night Ledger
Skye’s Rest Guestbook Mystery
NIGHT CASE · 9:34 PM
A guest has signed the ledger. The trouble is, she checked out nearly half a century ago.
Fog has swallowed the road below Skye’s Rest. During a ninety-second blackout, the brass key to the widow’s walk vanished—and a new line appeared in Isla Skye’s blue-leather guestbook.
The name belongs to a woman from an old ledger. Four present-day guests were in the inn. One of them borrowed the name, climbed the forbidden stairs, and left a promise in violet ink.

Isla’s case note
The borrowed name belonged to a promise.
June Alder took the brass key during the blackout and climbed to the widow’s walk. The green wool caught on the key hook came from her shawl. Her mysterious entry repeated the ninety-three steps recorded by Evelyn Marr in 1978, and June’s own remark about a lantern “keeping a promise” revealed the family connection.
Evelyn was June’s grandmother. June wanted to relight the lantern on the anniversary of Evelyn’s first stay, but lost her nerve when the fog thickened. She dropped the key beneath the first stair, where Clove later found it. Secretive? Yes. Sinister? Not this time.
Clove’s assessment
“Mrrp.” The key has been recovered. The salmon reward remains under negotiation.
